Question: My parents have been married for 25 years and been really happy, lately they haven’t been, I just went to camp and came back and they told me they were having a temporary separation, and I just don’t know what to do with my self and my emotions, I just need advice.
This is a question that represents a lot of kids out there today. So many parents are splitting up and as a consequence children’s lives are changing. As parents we need to be cognizant of this and make sure we are there to support thee kids during this time. True, at the time of separation the adults are going through massive life changes, but these changes were brought about by their own doing. The kid in the situation is there caught in the middle and realizing that they have no control or input with this matter. As the adult in this situation it is important to speak to the child honestly and openly at a level that is appropriate for their age. Children will hold onto the fantasy of the parents reuniting and everything being “okay” again someday. It is important to kindly and gently head this off at the pass and reassure them that this will not happen.
